Quebec-France lawyer mobility agreement: another step
toward a new economic space for Quebec

Montréal, May 30, 2009 – On the occasion of the signing of a Quebec-France agreement on lawyer mobility, the Board of Trade of Metropolitan Montreal takes this opportunity to stress the need to further open Quebec to labour mobility.

“The Board of Trade is pleased to see the Barreau du Québec follow up on the agreement on labour mobility concluded between the governments of France and Quebec. We warmly welcome the signing of a Mutual Recognition Agreement (MRA) between the Barreau du Québec and the Conseil national des Barreaux français ensuring the mobility of lawyers between Quebec and France,” declared Michel Leblanc, President and CEO of the Board of Trade.

“As we rapidly approach 2016, the year when Quebec's labour force is expected to begin shrinking, we have no option but to create new channels allowing a growing number of foreign workers to choose Quebec,” added Leblanc.

“The Quebec Government has demonstrated strong leadership in opening a new economic space for Quebec to which French workers will enjoy easier access. It's now up to professional associations to follow the government's lead. We are thus extremely pleased to see that the Barreau du Québec has answered the call, and we are confident that this new arrangement will provide solid proof of the benefits to Quebec of opening its labour market to foreign talent,” concluded Leblanc.

The Board of Trade of Metropolitan Montreal has some 7,000 members. Its primary mission is to represent the interests of the business community of Greater Montréal and to provide individuals, merchants, and local businesses of all sizes with a variety of specialized services to help them achieve their full potential in terms of innovation, productivity and competitiveness. The Board of Trade is Quebec's leading private economic development organization.
