The Board of Trade of Metropolitan Montreal congratulates the newly elected government

Montreal, April 14, 2003 - The Board of Trade of Metropolitan Montreal wishes to congratulate the Liberal Party of Quebec and its leader, Jean Charest, on their victory earlier tonight.  “We wish them the best of luck, but also the best of judgment in the execution of their duties at the highest level of Quebec public office,” declared Benoit Labonté, president of the Board of Trade.

“We would also like to commend the efforts made during the election campaign by the Parti québécois and the Action démocratique du Québec.  The leaders of all three of the major parties presented relevant but very different ideas, making for a stimulating campaign.

“After this campaign, which, in many respects, was run under the banner of change, the Board of Trade hopes that those envisaged by the Liberal government will be first and foremost constructive for Quebec and, in particular, for the economic engine of our province – metropolitan Montreal.  For more than fifty years, the Board of Trade has supported the idea of combining the entire Island of Montreal in a single city.  With this goal accomplished, we now wish to continue to work for the irreversible advancement of the new cities of Montreal and Longueuil.  The competitiveness of companies in the metropolitan area and the prosperity of its citizens depend largely on the success of these new cities.  The Board of Trade was thus pleased to hear the personal preference expressed by the new premier “that the new cities succeed” – and expect him to do everything in his power to turn this wish into a dazzling reality,” concluded Labonté.

The Board of Trade of Metropolitan Montreal has more than 7 000 members. Its mission is to be the leading group representing the interests of the Greater Montreal business community. The objectives are to maintain, at all times, relevance to its membership, credibility towards the media and influence towards government and decision-makers.
