Citizens’ jury – I see mtl
Indicators for measuring the city’s prosperity

Montréal, October 18, 2014 – A panel of experts took part today in public hearings with the citizens’ jury for I see mtl organized by the Institut du Nouveau Monde and Youth Fusion. The jury was mandated to issue an opinion about key indicators for measuring the economic prosperity of Greater Montréal.

“The proposals presented in the report Créer un nouvel élan à Montréal, which inspired the I see mtl initiative, emphasized the importance of evaluating progress in the city,” said Michel Leblanc, a spokesperson for I see mtl and president and CEO of the Board of Trade of Metropolitan Montreal. “This first step for the citizens’ jury was intended to build a consensus around indicators to track the evolution of the economic prosperity of Montréal and identify the challenges and successes on the road to revitalizing the city.” .

According to Michel Venne, executive director of the INM, “The citizens’ jury is an exercise that will allow individuals selected at random to learn about measuring prosperity and to deliberate and form an opinion. The expression of the collective intelligence of a group of citizens is exactly what’s needed for tackling such an important challenge for Greater Montréal.”

“Youth Fusion is concerned about the future of the younger generation and wanted to get involved in this citizen-driven exercise, the impact of which will be felt for years to come,” said Gabriel Bran Lopez, president and founder of Youth Fusion and spokesperson for the Québec Entrepreneurship Contest. “It is essential as part of this effort that we mobilize people from every generation and background.”

“This day of discussion will have served not only to inform citizens and Internet users about measuring the prosperity of cities, but also to demystify the criteria that could guide the implementation of projects proposed during the I see mtl event on November 17,” said Jacques Ménard, a spokesperson for I see mtl, chairman of BMO Nesbitt Burns and president of BMO Financial Group, Québec. “A dashboard will be developed to monitor the evolution and measure the impact of the projects proposed.”
