The Board of Trade of Metropolitan Montreal applauds the creation of a clinical genomic centre in pediatrics

Montréal, October 21, 2013  ‒ The Board of Trade of Metropolitan Montreal is delighted with the creation of a clinical genomic centre in pediatrics, the result of a partnership between Génome Québec and the CHU Sainte-Justine.

“Today’s announcement by Quebec Premier Pauline Marois and the Minister of Health and Social Services, Dr. Réjean Hébert, is excellent news for the city,” said Michel Leblanc, President and CEO of the Board of Trade of Metropolitan Montreal. “The creation of such a centre is testimony to our incredible expertise in a scientific field of the future and reinforces the city’s role as a leader in life sciences and health technology.”

“Our life science cluster had a rough ride in recent years, with the closing of several pharmaceutical research centres,” Mr. Leblanc said. “And yet we have extraordinary assets, in particular the quality of our teams of researchers. This new centre is a first in Canada and positions Montréal as one of the few cities in the world with such a concentration of expertise. This centre will help attract even more international luminaries in clinical genomics in pediatrics to Montréal and promote the transfer of knowledge from the region’s many universities, thereby stimulating the development of our economic base in knowledge and innovation.”

“The Board of Trade would like to acknowledge in particular the important contribution of Dr. Fabrice Brunet, CEO of the CHU Sainte-Justine, and Marc LePage, President and CEO of Génome Québec, for the creation of this new centre,” Michel Leblanc said. “Thanks to Génome Québec and Mr. LePage’s dedication, scientists who work in research centres in the metropolitan area are increasingly making their presence felt and carving out a leading place for themselves on the international scene.”
