Great Montrealers join the Ordre de Montréal

Next December will mark the beginning of a new chapter in the history of our city’s builders. During a ceremony held by the Ville de Montréal, the city’s new honorary award—the Ordre de Montréal—will recognize the 132 previous recipients of the title of Great Montrealer. The Ordre will thereby take up the torch from the Academy of Great Montrealers—an initiative of the Chamber started almost 30 years ago—and continue to celebrate the exceptional contribution of distinguished Montrealers.

As we await the formal ceremony, it should be noted that the nomination process for the Ordre closes just a few days from now. Who can be nominated? Native Montrealers or those who have chosen Montréal as their adoptive city and who have distinguished themselves in one or more of the following ways: by having made a formative contribution to the development of Montréal; by having made a notable contribution to Montréal’s national or international reputation; by having shown exemplary commitment to the community; or by having made exceptional professional achievements. Individuals from all spheres of activity are eligible: culture, the economy, community life, science, and entrepreneurship.

For this first edition, nominations will be studied by a council co-chaired by internationally recognized lawyer and judge the Honourable Louise Arbour, and explorer and mountaineer Bernard Voyer. The names of the 17 recipients will be announced in the spring of 2017, and the presentation ceremony will be held on May 17, on the 375th anniversary of our city’s founding—an event that will no doubt be very emotional.

The Chamber is encouraging the entire business community to nominate all individuals deserving of such an honour.
