Why China

The potential of the chinese construction market

30% green construction by 2020

Since 2010, China has been the world’s leading construction market. In the long term, the country wants to focus on green building, with a goal of making 30% of new construction green by 2020.

50% of buildings constructed worldwide by 2025

In 2014, 58 buildings over 200 metres tall were built on Chinese land; each year, China adds about 2 billion square metres of constructed area and undertakes several renovations. A key player on the construction market, China builds about a third of the buildings erected in the world, and is predicted to build half of the world’s buildings by 2025.

Shanghai

126 skyscrapers, including the world’s second tallest building

Shanghai is the biggest city in China and the country’s most important business hub. Its GDP makes up 25% of China’s total GDP. With its population of over 23 million inhabitants, who see themselves as urban, Shanghai is the most populous city in the country. Shanghai’s urban landscape is changing as fast as the city is growing. Its principal areas of activity include the construction sector, notably as far as skyscrapers go. There are 126 skyscrapers in the city, including the world’s second tallest building: Shanghai Tower, a uniquely designed skyscraper that rises 632 metres over 127 storeys.

  • In Shanghai, 67% of skyscrapers hold professional offices, 20% are mixed-use buildings, and the rest are divided between residential buildings and hotels.

Hong Kong (officially named the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region)

Canada’s 8th largest export market

Hong Kong is an autonomous administrative region in China: it has its own currency, its own legal and political systems, and a high degree of autonomy in all spheres, except for foreign affairs and defence.

Hong Kong is one of the world’s most important financial capitals, as well as a major place of business and culture. It has a highly developed capitalist economy. With the world’s most competitive economy (according to the World Competitiveness Yearbook 2016), and the “freest” global economy since 1995 (according to The Heritage Foundation), Hong Kong is Canada’s 8th largest export market. According to the 2016 World Investment Report (UNCTAD), Hong Kong ranks second in foreign direct investments (FDI). Also known as a superconnector between Mainland China and the rest of the world, Hong Kong is an ideal place for foreign businesses.

  • In Hong Kong, reconstruction and renovation are ongoing in the rich property market. Architecture and design firms are extremely well positioned to take advantage of this market.

Who should take part?

  • construction and renovation material
  • construction software
