Giving Tuesday: the business community joins forces to fight poverty

On Tuesday, November 27, we celebrate Generosity Day through the Giving Tuesday movement. Every year since 2012, this day has been marked after Black Friday and Cyber Monday. The business community is encouraged to donate their time, money and talent on Giving Tuesday... it’s a great way to give back to the community!

This is an opportunity for companies to mobilize their employees and encourage people to pull together by getting behind causes they care about. It is a chance to support charities that help make Montréal a place where everyone is on equal footing when it comes to living with dignity and achieving their full potential.

Poverty in Montréal: an issue that concerns us all

According to the study Comparer Montréal published in June by the Institut du Québec in cooperation with the Chamber, the percentage of Montrealers who live in poverty is on the rise. It jumped from 13.3% in 2016 to 18.9% in 2017, an increase of over 5.6 percentage points. These numbers put Montréal in last place among the 15 major North American cities studied and show the urgency of joining forces to combat poverty.

The data for Greater Montréal are telling: over 200,000 people struggle to get enough to eat. In the most disadvantaged neighbourhoods, one child in three starts kindergarten without the resources they need to get their education off on the right foot, and twice that number of young people drop out of high school.

Centraide’s important role

We need to take action to help people succeed and give families the tools they need to work their way out of difficult situations. Centraide of Greater Montréal is at the heart of efforts by supporting some 350 organizations with deep roots in the community that help improve the lives of many people experiencing hardship. By adapting social investments to the reality of neighbourhoods and creating a strong spirit of innovation and cooperation among partners, Centraide enables those in need to get the most out of the resources mobilized.

Giving Tuesday

For Giving Tuesday, the business community is encouraged to show more generosity than ever. Every donation, no matter its size, is welcome and makes a difference.

This year, for every dollar donated to Centraide of Greater Montréal before November 30, TC Transcontinental will match the amount, up to $10,000. Twice the donations will create twice the impact for people in need. Let’s seize this opportunity now!
