Special ceremony for the first recipients of the Ordre de Montréal

Honouring Montrealers who have made remarkable contributions to the development and reputation of our city has been a tradition for nearly 40 years. Started by CN in 1978, the tradition was taken over 10 years later by the Chamber of Commerce of Metropolitan Montreal with the Academy of Great Montrealers. It is now the City's turn to give these exceptional individuals full recognition for their contribution with its new award: the Ordre de Montréal.

On Saturday, December 17, a new chapter will begin in the history of our city’s builders. A special ceremony will be held at city hall to induct the 132 people who have received the title of “Great Montrealer” over the years. Distinguished title-holders such as Kent Nagano, Julie Payette, Dominique Michel and Daniel Langlois will also receive the title of commander, the highest of the order’s three ranks.

Our Great Montrealers will pave the way for the 17 annual recipients of the Ordre de Montréal, who will receive their medals every May 17 starting in 2017. The first ceremony will be held on the day of Montreal’s 375th anniversary, which means that the Ordre de Montréal will always commemorate this key moment in our city’s history.

The Chamber is very pleased to hand off this wonderful tradition to honour people who serve as sources of pride and inspiration for us all.
